Phase II
Phase II is approximately 3-6 months in
duration.
Participants advance to Phase II after they have successfully completed primary treatment.
Primary treatment is usually defined as those initial services a participant was referred into
for substance abuse/mental health services initially upon entering into the Drug Court
Program; additional services may follow, but are not considered primary. A participant may
remain in a primary status and receive multiple treatment or therapeutic placement
options. This may occur due to the Drug Court participant continuing to use mood altering
chemicals, or being prematurely discharged from placement multiple times.
While in Phase II, reporting to
one's Drug Court Counselor may be reduced to every other week, and drug screens could now be reduced to a random testing schedule twice weekly.
In addition, court visits can now be stretched to every other week, or even every three
weeks depending upon other circumstances, and self help groups are attended at least
twice weekly.
This phase emphasizes social and occupational functioning and stability in recovery. If the
participant has not secured gainful employment (approved by the court) or obtained a
GED, he/she is referred to an appropriate organization which specializes in job readiness and
referral, or GED preparation. The Drug Court Counselor makes the referral and periodically
follows up with the referral source. This information, along with other details, is reported
back to the judge and other members of the case review team at Drug Court case reviews
prior to Drug Court sessions.
Participants in this phase will also be required to start and/or continue in regular
attendance, as instructed, at local self-help recovery meetings. Another option in this
phase, once initial treatment services have convened, is attendance in aftercare/relapse
prevention classes provided by the Drug Court.
If a participant relapses while in Phase II, a formal case review will be held to determine
the most prudent course of action. Options include, but are not limited to; placement back
in Phase I, with additional treatment services recommended; detainment in Phase II, with
additional treatment services recommended; increase self-help recovery meetings; or more
frequent case management meetings with one's counselor. The goal at this juncture, is to
not do a "knee-jerk" response, but moreover, to find out what is occurring and respond
with a course of action that has been thought through, considering the benefit of the
participant, as well as the community.
