Introduction
A District Court Referee
must be an attorney in good standing admitted to the practice of law
in the State of Nebraska and shall meet any other requirements imposed
by the Court.
Referees are responsible
for making findings and recommendations in any and all matters regarding
the establishment, modification, enforcement and collection of child,
spousal, or medical support and paternity matters and are subject to
the provisions of the Nebraska Judges Code of Judicial Conduct.
Referees are authorized to
summon and enforce the attendance of parties and witnesses, administer
all necessary oaths, supervise pretrial preparation pursuant to the
rules of discovery, grant continuances and adjournments, recommend the
appointment of counsel, and carry out any other duties permitted by
law and assigned by the District Court.
Hearings are conducted
in the same manner as a hearing before the District Court. Testimony
is preserved by tape recording. Transcripts of hearings are available
upon request and the party for whom it is prepared pays the cost of
preparing the transcript.
