Introduction

A District Court Referee must be an attorney in good standing admitted to the practice of law in the State of Nebraska and shall meet any other requirements imposed by the Court.

Referees are responsible for making findings and recommendations in any and all matters regarding the establishment, modification, enforcement and collection of child, spousal, or medical support and paternity matters and are subject to the provisions of the Nebraska Judges Code of Judicial Conduct.

Referees are authorized to summon and enforce the attendance of parties and witnesses, administer all necessary oaths, supervise pretrial preparation pursuant to the rules of discovery, grant continuances and adjournments, recommend the appointment of counsel, and carry out any other duties permitted by law and assigned by the District Court.

Hearings are conducted in the same manner as a hearing before the District Court. Testimony is preserved by tape recording. Transcripts of hearings are available upon request and the party for whom it is prepared pays the cost of preparing the transcript.
